Samuel’s Story

Told by his mother.

Samuel as a teenager, grinning, standing in his family's living room.

Samuel loved music, which is why we called this site "Samuel's Song."

Samuel was the youngest of my children at that time when I left their dad. What a sweet personality Samuel had, such an easy-going happy kid. Samuel was pleasant to be around, he was as they say a gentle giant. He was the tallest of my six kids, 6′3″. I remember when I would get home from a long day of work Samuel would run to greet me at the door and ask, "What’s for dinner mom?"

Sam had a normal childhood, played little league sports like the rest of my kids. I remember practicing catch with him in the yard. All these years later he remembered that. We were sitting at a table during a visit in a correctional facility.

He said “Mom, I remember you playing catch with me, thank you.” That melted my heart, he was about 30 yrs. old when he mentioned that to me.

My whole focus is based on the word CHOICES. How can one little word dictate so much of what happens in one’s life? One word that unveils the direction of where life can take you.

The takeaway from this, I want you to ponder: Samuel made poor choices, and he admitted that. He was so sorry he made a huge poor choice and the consequences of them. We've all at times made poor choices, apologize for them, take it back, even have a chance to start fresh.

Some of Samuel's choices sent him away to prison for many years, but he was finally able to come home, putting his troubles behind him, ready to start over. Not long after, he was walking through the neighborhood when a drive-by shooting took his life. He wasn’t the target, just a man out for a walk.

Seeing all the struggles Samuel went through because of his poor choices was extremely excruciating for me as his mom. This is very, very personal to me and my family. Our prayer for you is that you would make good choices to prevent you and your family from experiencing such brokenness and heartache that we’ve been through. We feel the emptiness of Samuel’s presence in our lives everyday.

No matter who you are, God cares about you, your life, and your well-being. No one can change your past, but it’s never too late to start thinking about how to change your future.

Maybe you are stuck thinking things can’t change for you. We’re here to tell you they can change for the better! I’ve been there and it is rough, but God is good and faithful, and will never turn away from you.
